Digit games: the simple case
In a Pick 3 game, each of the three positions can be any digit from 0 to 9. That gives 10 × 10 × 10 = 1,000 possible results. If you play one exact order, your chance is 1 in 1,000.
Pick 4 and Daily 4 games add one more digit, so the total becomes 10 × 10 × 10 × 10 = 10,000. One exact order has a 1 in 10,000 chance. That is where the famous number comes from.

Pick-5 games: order doesn't matter
Games like Fantasy 5 ask you to choose five numbers from a larger pool, often 1 to 39. Here the order does not matter, so we count combinations instead. For 5 numbers out of 39 there are 575,757 possible sets. A smaller pool, like 1 to 36, gives 376,992 sets.

If a Pick 4 game draws twice a day and you play one straight ticket each time, you would expect to match the exact order about once every 5,000 days on average. That is roughly 13.7 years. Some people win sooner and many never do, because every draw is independent.
